Chiropractic Care Benefits Sufferers of Common Headaches

July 2, 2014   •   Leah McAlpine, James Hoffman

Once again, the long days of summer are upon us bringing with them a rise in nearly everyone's activity level. Whether that means more time with the kids or getting outside to enjoy all that Colorado has to offer, one thing is certain, summertime brings with it an unfortunate increase in the need for chiropractic care. Like clockwork, as the temperatures rise, so do visits to our Thornton chiropractic office. Our licensed chiropractors, Drs. Leah McAlpine and James Hoffman, are always here to help you with traditional back pain, but our patients often overlook another common side effect of always being on the go come summer, headaches and the associated neck pain that accompany them. Did you know that chiropractic adjustment techniques are highly effective in treating headaches and the symptoms they produce?

The good news is that the medical understanding of headaches has taken into account the chiropractic model for treatment because many are caused by damaged structures in the neck. Today, many people are turning to chiropractic doctors to alleviate the causes and symptoms of headaches including those that are cervicogenic (neck) related. Chiropractic care has been shown to help with migraines, tension, and cluster headaches. As a patient, you should know that headaches are NOT normal and can stem from several root causes. Some are very serious (blood clots, blood vessels bleeding in the brain, tumors, etc.), while some are much more simple (dehydration, stress, and subluxations involving neck vertebrae being out of place). Chiropractic adjustment can help! In fact, one of the most common reasons our patients seek care at Alpine Chiropractic is for headaches and associated neck pain.

According to the Mayo Clinic, many headaches, including migraines, may be caused by "changes in the brainstem and its interaction with major pain pathways." When your spine becomes misaligned, the canal which supports the brainstem, spinal cord, and the associated nerve bundles become altered resulting in the debilitating effects of headaches. Subluxations (vertebrae out of place) can also cause muscle spasms that, in turn, result in headaches. Other factors such as stress, bad posture, injuries to neck muscles, and referred pain can all contribute to headache pain. Advanced chiropractic adjustment techniques, including spinal manipulation, have been shown to provide improvement for those headaches which originate in the neck, and even the upper back.

So, why deal with headaches and/or neck pain this summer? You should be taking advantage of everything the season brings with it and be free of pain. Our team of chiropractic doctors, combined with our in-house massage services, are here to provide you with the highest level of chiropractic care available. It's time you manage your headache pain efficiently and effectively. Contact Alpine Chiropractic today, and have a great summer.
